Greatest goals from Arsenal v Crystal Palace down the years

By Oscar Maung-Haley

With Arsenal's weekend clash against Crystal Palace coming up, we take a look back at some special goals from some previous encounters

Olivier Giroud vs Crystal Palace

Let’s start with the best of the bunch. Yes, THAT Olivier Giroud goal.

Collecting the ball just outside of the Gunners box, Hector Bellerin fired a pass into the feet of Giroud, whose delightful backheel pass to Granit Xhaka set things in motion.

From there, Xhaka gave the ball to Alex Iwobi, who set Alexis Sanchez free down the right hand side.

The Chilean winger stopped just shy of the box, put the ball back onto his right foot and lifted a cross into the area, probably intended to find the head of the towering Giroud.

What unfolded next was a moment of sheer brilliance.

With the ball behind him, Giroud produced an outrageous scorpion kick that almost no one could have predicted, clipping the underside of Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey’s cross bar.

So brilliant was the goal, it was awarded the FIFA Puskas award for 2017, in what could only be described as a shining example of the beautiful game.

Ian Wright vs Crystal Palace

While he might have been a club legend for both sides, Ian Wright finds his way into the top five thanks to his late 1992 winner for the Gunners against Palace.

Having made the switch across London to join Arsenal in September 1991 for £2.5m, Wright’s return to Selhurst Park saw him face off against the Eagles for the first time since his departure.

A goal from Paul Merson on five minutes looked to be a sign that it would be a long evening for Crystal Palace, but the hosts managed to weather the storm, equalising on 69 minutes through Eddie McGoldrick.

However, Wright then turned up to the party minutes later, combining nicely with Kevin Campbell to fire home past Nigel Martyn, which saw the Gunners win 2-1.

James McArthur v Arsenal

James McArthur’s glancing header against Arsenal makes its way onto the list because of what it represented for the Eagles.

Heading into the spring clash, Palace had never won a game at the Emirates before in their history.

But the visitors led on 17 minutes through Christian Benteke, who headed home past Bernd Leno.

Mesut Ozil equalised before Wilfred Zaha pounced on an error from Shkodran Mustafi to restore Palace’s lead.

And then nearly 10 minutes later, McArthur’s glancing header wrapped up all three points for Palace, giving them a famous win at the Emirates.

It should also be noted that the Palace win saw Mustafi drop a number of almighty clangers that could only be better described as a ‘disasterclass’ in defending…*shudders*.

Aaron Ramsey vs Crystal Palace

Heading into the final throes of action, Arsenal and Palace looked set to play out a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the 2014/15 Premier League campaign.

Palace took the lead 10 minutes before the break through Brede Hangeland, before Arsenal equalised right on the stroke of half-time through Laurent Koscielny.

However, for all the action in the first half, the second remained a tense affair.

It burst into life on 89 minutes however when Palace midfielder Jason Puncheon was sent off for a second bookable offence leaving them down to 10 for the final minutes.

And Arsenal took advantage of the sending off by bombing forward in the final minutes as they looked for a late winner.

Thankfully for the Gunners, Aaron Ramsey popped up in the box, tucking in a 91st minute saved Mathieu Debuchy rebound past Palace keeper Julien Speroni to send them Emirates into rapturous scenes.

Yohan Cabaye v Arsenal

And rounding out our list is Yohan Cabaye’s stupendously struck effort in Crystal Palace’s 3-0 demolition of Arsenal at Selhurst Park in 2017.

The French midfielder burst into the box to get on the end of a Wilfred Zaha cut back, striking the ball first time from the far-right hand side.

His shot looped over Emi Martinez into the bottom left hand corner, it what was the most audacious of goals on a memorable night at Selhurst Park.
