What are the best Arsenal kits of all time?

By Oli Dickson Jefford

Football fans are a nostalgic bunch, and at any match you are likely to see fans not only wearing that season’s kit but some retro outfits as well.

Arsenal’s recent release of kits from the 1990s are a sign of how popular vintage and retro kits can be, and over the years the Gunners have worn some memorable outfits.

From traditional red and white to more experimental away shirts and a fitting tribute to their old ground, the club have graced English football with some classic kits.

Here is our selection of some of Arsenal’s best kits over the years.

1969-78 Home

There have certainly been more eye-catching and flashier kits worn by Arsenal over the years, but the kit worn by the club during the late 1960s and 1970s is undoubtedly a classic.

This is the kit that multiple generations of Arsenal fans will think back to more often, featuring the old club logo and starring in a time before sponsors were emblazoned on the front.

The red centre coupled with a white collar and sleeves with a red trimming remain a simple yet highly effective design and is a kit unlikely to be forgotten any time soon.

It is simple yet incredibly elegant and stylish and saw some of the club’s greatest wear it with pride.

1988-90 Home

The home kit of the late 1980s started a trend of patterned shirts at Highbury and was one of the most effective and sleek designs the club has ever pulled off.

Still featuring the old logo and with JVC, one of the club’s most famous sponsors, sitting in the middle, this is a kit that is instantly recognisable.

Compared to some of the more modern designs this kit didn’t appear too clinical and represents a huge successful period of the club’s history.

1991-92 Away

Yellow has been a frequent fixture of Arsenal’s away kits and this outfit from the early 1990s was one of the very best ever produced by the club.

The yellow shirt, emblazoned with navy blue arrowheads and with a red and navy blue trim, were divisive at the time but 30 years down the line the kit is considered an undeniable classic.

Club legend Ian Wright has pointed to this as one of his favourite strips during his time at the club, and this certainly a high point of the club’s relationship with Adidas.

1997-98 Away

This away shirt harked back to a more traditional design, but still looks modern enough and landmarks part of the golden era under Arsene Wenger.

While the 91-92 design was more creative, the navy sash across the shorts and collars is no less effective and striking and remains a fan favourite.

Its baggy design makes the kit perhaps even more memorable and popular with retro shirt fans and is right up there with the best kits the club has ever produced.

2005-06 Home

In their final season at Highbury, the club decided to pay tribute to their iconic stadium with a kit design based on the colours they first wore at the stadium 90 years prior.

And, despite moving away from the team’s traditional red, the ‘redcurrant’ outfit is one that lives long in the memory for Arsenal fans.

With the gold Nike logo and O2 sponsor sitting in the middle of the kit, this is an incredibly striking outfit and one that paid a deserved tribute to Highbury in its final season.
