Five great goals in Arsenal v Newcastle clashes over the years

By Tom Masters

Arsenal face Newcastle this weekend, looking to get back to winning ways following a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.

Facing Eddie Howe’s winless Newcastle side at the Emirates will hopefully produce goals, as Mikel Arteta looks to go on another winning run.

This is a fixture that has produced some crazy results over the years, a 4-4 draw, a 7-3 win for Arsenal and everything in between.

With that said, we have a look at five of the best goals scored in this fixture.

Santi Cazorla – Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle United (Emirates Stadium) 13/12/2014

On his 30th birthday the Spanish midfielder scored a sublime goal to make the score 2-0 early in the second half.

Olivier Giroud played the Spaniard through and with a delightful touch he broke free of Newcastle's defence.

He then proceeded to put in a phenomenal chip over a hopeless Jak Alnwick in the Newcastle goal.

Theo Walcott – Arsenal 7-3 Newcastle United (Emirates Stadium) 29/12/2012

Walcott completed a fantastic hat-trick in an incredible ten-goal thriller with a brilliant 90th minute goal.

Walcott received the ball out on the left, cut inside, was fouled in the box, got back up and evaded the tackle of another defender, leaving four Newcastle bodies on the floor.

He then managed to chip the goalkeeper with a textbook finish to conclude an incredible game with the match ball.

Arsenal may have suffered defeat in this clash due to two late goals at the hands of Bobby Robson’s Newcastle, but they opened the contest with a fantastic goal from Frenchman Robert Pires.

Thierry Henry played in a sensational acrobatic ball over his head, which was met by Ashley Cole, who played the ball into Robert Pires who simply could not miss.

It was an incredible goal at Highbury that showcased everything that Arsenal team was about.

Cheik Tioté – Newcastle United 4-4 Arsenal (St James’ Park) 05/02/2011

The Gunners led 2-0 after three minutes, and 4-0 after just 26 as they burst out of the blocks.

It seemed that they would record a comfortable win in Newcastle before the Magpies produced one of the greatest Premier League comebacks.

Two penalties from Joey Barton and a Leon Best header gave them a chance, and the moment came three minutes from time, when Ivorian midfielder Cheik Tioté struck an absolute beauty on the volley from outside the box to level the scores and send St James’ Park into raptures.

Dennis Bergkamp – Newcastle United 0-2 Arsenal (St James’ Park) 02/03/2002

One of Arsenal’s best ever goals was scored in this very fixture, with Dutch forward Dennis Bergkamp opening the scoring to avenge that 3-1 defeat from earlier in the season.

He received the ball with plenty to do, before a marvellous touch over the defender’s head, which he was then able to simply slide home.

If the Puskas awards were around back then it was a goal worthy of that, it was that good, and put the Gunners in a fantastic position.
