Assessing Zinchenko + Jesus debuts
By Oli Dickson Jefford
Arsenal’s season got off to the perfect start on Friday night with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
After the disappointment in the opening match 12 months ago against Brentford, this was a much better display against a side that certainly tested them at times.
Gabriel Martinelli may have attracted headlines with his first goal of the season to kickstart Arsenal’s campaign, but eyes were also on Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Both joined the Gunners from Manchester City this summer and were making their first competitive appearances in red and white – and the pair certainly made an impact.
Jesus thrives in No.9 role
He may not have got on the scoresheet but Jesus’ display at Selhurst Park last night will have excited Gunners fans.
It was a strong performance from the Brazilian who looks like he could thrive in the talismanic role he was never quite able to nail down at the Etihad.
The 25-year-old was a constant threat to the Palace back line and his passing and link up play was key to many of Arsenal’s best chances and opportunities throughout the match.
Arsenal’s forward line was their strength last season but it is easy to see that Jesus is adding another extra dimension to it that could make their attack one of the best in the league.
His performance was so good that many fans had his as their man of the match despite not scoring, and it looks like he could become a firm favourite at the Emirates this year.
Zinchenko shows sparks of form
Zinchenko’s talent has never been questioned but there were occasionally concerns about his consistency at Man City.
However, the early signs in an Arsenal shirt were positive for the Ukrainian.
No one had more touches of the ball in the opening 30 minutes than the 25-year-old and he was also instrumental in Arsenal’s opening goal, providing the assist for Martinelli.
It was a little bit of a surprise to see him start but it looks as if Mikel Arteta will make him a key part of the team, moving him to more of an attacking role rather than a defensive one.
There were evident signs of fatigue for Zinchenko as the game progressed but there is no doubt that he could fit well in the side this season.
With William Saliba also impressing on his debut, Arsenal’s new signings could well make this a hugely positive season for the red side of North London.
