Transfer Profile: Yeremy Pino
By Oli Dickson Jefford
Arsenal have had a strong transfer window so far, with the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko both making an impressive mark in their early days in North London.
Yet, despite a perfect start to the season, it looks as if Mikel Arteta and Edu will not be resting on their laurels as they look to strengthen their squad before the window shuts.
As always, the Gunners are being linked with an array of players and one of those that is attracting attention is Villarreal star Yeremy Pino.
The 19-year-old could be set for a move to the Emirates within the next couple of weeks - here’s all you need to know about the teenager.
Career to date
Born in the Canary Islands, Pino joined Las Palmas’ youth set up in 2014 and spent three years there before moving to Villarreal.
His move to the ‘Yellow Submarine’ came at the expense of Barcelona, whom he rejected in 2017, as he headed to mainland Spain to continue his burgeoning career.
The forward made his first appearance for Villareal C in 2019 and a year later made his senior debut for the club in 2020, before last season becoming a regular for the club.
And he made history when Villarreal stunned Manchester United to win the Europa League in 2021, eclipsing both Iker Casillas as the youngest Spaniard to start in a European final and Robin van Persie as the youngest winner of the competition.
Pino is approaching a century of appearances for the clubs, scoring 17 times in 98 appearances.
How would he fit at Arsenal?
With both Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaving North London in recent months, Arsenal were looking for more strikers this summer.
Though Jesus has filled that hole quite significantly, there would be no harm in adding to their options.
Pino would most likely be a back-up striker at the Emirates behind the Brazilian and the quality is certainly there to play a big part.
However, considering he is now a first-team regular at Villarreal it would be unlikely if he would settle for being second choice for too long.
And with the likes of Eddie Nketiah also looking to muscle their way into the starting XI, there may be some competition for him at the Emirates.
Should Arsenal look to sign him?
Pino is someone Arsenal should look to target as he has proven quality.
The 19-year-old has first-team experience - as well as trophy-winning experience - and would fit well with the young squad that Arteta is seemingly trying to build.
However, the main question is whether Pino would want to move somewhere where first-team football might not be guaranteed.
