Who should Arsenal go after on Transfer Deadline Day
By Jonny Bray
The summer transfer window closes on 1st September at 11pm, but there is still plenty of time to get important business done.
Arsenal have enjoyed their best start to a Premier League season since 2004/05, when the Gunners won their opening five games before drawing 2-2 with Sam Allardyce's iconic Bolton side at Highbury.
However, there are no delusions of grandeur amongst the Arsenal faithful. This side is not ready to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table.
But they could be if Mikel Arteta, Edu and the Arsenal board play their cards right over the next 60 hours or so.
Our starting XI is good enough, but the squad lacks depth in midfield, on the wing and up front.
If Arsenal sign some top-quality cover over the coming days, then there is no telling what this team could achieve.
With that in mind, here are the players Arsenal should go after on Transfer Deadline Day.
Youri Tielemans
After being linked with a move to Arsenal for months, it is beginning to feel like Youri Tielemans will be the 'nearly man' of the 2022 summer window.
But it would be a shame if he joins the likes of Houssem Aouar and Alexander Isak as a player linked with a move to the Emirates whose transfer couldn't quite get over the line.
The Leicester City and Belgium star would be an excellent backup to Martin Ødegaard as the most advanced of Arsenal's three midfielders.
And he could even work as part of a two against the weaker sides in the league.
Wilfried Zaha
In hindsight, Arsenal should have signed Wilfried Zaha instead of Nicolas Pépé.
It is not too late to bring the Crystal Palace legend to The Emirates, but he is a different player now.
When the Gunners first went after Zaha he was an all-action winger, but he's developed his game and can now play up front.
His finishes against Liverpool and Aston Villa suggest his end product is the best it has ever been, and he would provide excellent cover on both wings and at striker.
He wants out of South London while Palace chairman Steve Parish is keen to get a fee for the forward, who would be able to leave on a free next summer.
So, Gunners fans could finally see Zaha in the red and white of Arsenal this season.
Moisés Caicedo
Since his performance in Brighton's 2-1 win against Manchester United on the opening day of the season, Moisés Caicedo has been the name on everybody's lips.
The 20-year-old only signed for The Seagulls in February 2021, but he has already made a big impact on the Premier League.
He is wanted by The Red Devils, but Arsenal have also been linked with the Ecuadorian's signature.
Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey have played well so far this season, but if Arsenal want to challenge for the title rather than the top four, they will need another top-quality midfielder capable of playing in a double pivot.
Caicedo could be the man for the job.
Pedro Neto
Pépé's departure has left Arteta light on the right wing.
Zaha could provide that cover, but a better option for the long-term is Wolves wide man Pedro Neto.
At 22, the Portuguese international still has plenty of time to improve.
And he has already shown his worth in the Premier League over several seasons.
He is back to his best after suffering a serious knee injury in the first half of a 1–0 away defeat against Fulham in April 2021.And he could offer a real alternative approach to Bukayo Saka on the right wing for years to come.
