The winners and losers of the summer transfer window
The winners and losers of the summer transfer window
By Jonny Bray
It's been a dramatic summer transfer window, with top-quality players from around the world joining Premier League sides.
Even clubs tipped for relegation have targeted elite talents this summer.
But who are the window's winners and losers?
The Winners
Arsenal
Arsenal have strengthened their starting XI this summer, with several leading Premier League talents joining the Gunners.
In Gabriel Jesus the Gunners finally have a 20-goal-a-season striker, while in Oleksandr Zinchenko they have acquired a criminally underrated and versatile talent.
Then there's Fábio Vieira.
He's yet to make his debut for Arsenal, but all signs suggest that he'll make a significant impact on Mikel Arteta's side.
Add Matt Turner and Marquinhos to that list, and Arsenal have enjoyed the best summer of any of the top sides based on what fans have seen so far.
Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace have gone about their business quietly this summer, but once again, their recruitment team have secured the signatures of some real gems.
Cheick Doucouré has impressed in all of his appearances for the Eagles so far.
Chris Richards is a versatile youngster who allows Patrick Vieira to play with a back three.
They have also snapped up Malcolm Ebiowei from Derby, who was one of the Championship's most exciting talents last term.
And in Sam Johnstone, they now have outstanding cover for Spanish goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
Tottenham
On paper, Tottenham have had a bizarre summer transfer window - but it feels like each of their new signings will fit into manager Antonio Conte's system perfectly.
He has already worked with Ivan Perišić, with the Italian praising the Croatian's versatility.
Despite his passion for keepie-uppies Richarlison is an exceptional player, while Yves Bissouma and Clément Lenglet will also add quality to this Spurs side.
And there is still more to come from Spurs' summer signings, with Djed Spence yet to play his best football in North London.
Most importantly of all, they kept hold of Harry Kane.
The Losers
Chelsea
Chelsea have spent millions of pounds yet have somehow managed to weaken their squad and make it less balanced.
They now have two elite left-backs after the signing of Marc Cucurella, but they have far less depth in the heart of their defence following the departures of Antonio Rüdiger and Anders Christiansen.
They've increased their firepower on the wing with the arrival of Raheem Sterling but they have shipped Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner off to pastures new.
They do have some exciting players returning from loans, and they have signed the superb Kalidou Koulibaly, but on the whole, it has been a disappointing window for the Blues.
And on transfer deadline day they made matters even worse, bringing in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in an attempt to solve their issues in front of goal.
Bournemouth
Scott Parker has been sacked for a reason.
Bournemouth did not want to spend big this summer, and as a result, they have been left with a squad that could struggle in the league this season.
Parker said as much in the aftermath of the 9-0 defeat against Liverpool.
It will take a miracle to keep that squad up.
Manchester United
Manchester United have spent big once against this summer, but their scatter gun approach suggests a panic at Old Trafford.
They missed out on top target Frenkie de Jong, instead signing Real Madrid legend Casemiro.
The Brazilian is a fantastic footballer, but some people doubt that he will fit into Erik ten Hag's system.
Lisandro Martínez has played well so far, but we are yet to see if Antony will be a success.
For the money they have spent, fans would be forgiven for expecting more at this stage in the season.
